Wikipedia Overview
Wikipedia is a freely accessible online encyclopedia created through collaborative efforts by a community of users known as Wikipedians. While registration is optional for editing, anyone can contribute or create articles. The platform’s name derives from “wiki,” a type of software that allows users to edit web content directly through a browser.
Founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger in January 2001, Wikipedia emerged as a successor to the earlier Nupedia project. Initially intended to supplement Nupedia, Wikipedia quickly surpassed it in scope. By January 2015, Wikipedia boasted over five million articles in English and an equivalent number in other languages. At that time, Alexa ranked it as the seventh-most popular site on the Internet, with Wikipedia being the only non-commercial site in the top ten.
Criticisms of Wikipedia often center on its openness, which some argue undermines reliability and authority. Articles lack bylines, which means authors are not publicly accountable, and anyone can edit entries, making the content susceptible to manipulation. In August 2007, Virgil Griffiths introduced WikiScanner, a tool that tracks edits to Wikipedia articles. It revealed that self-interested edits often involved either whitewashing criticisms or adding negative information about competitors. Wikipedia relies on vigilant editors to correct such issues.
In addition to Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Foundation oversees various other open-content projects, including:
Wikipedia, an open-source, web-based encyclopedia founded in 2001 and managed by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. It employs wiki software to facilitate article creation and development. Despite some high-profile issues with its editorial process, Wikipedia remains one of the most visited websites.
Origin and Growth
In 1996, Jimmy Wales, a successful bond trader, relocated to San Diego to establish Bomis, Inc., a web portal company. By March 2000, Wales and Larry Sanger founded Nupedia, a free online encyclopedia with a traditional review process and advisory board. As of January 2001, Nupedia had only a few articles, prompting Sanger to propose an open-source encyclopedia using wiki software. Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001, initially as a feature of Nupedia.com before becoming an independent site. Within its first year, Wikipedia grew to around 20,000 articles in 18 languages. In 2003, Nupedia was discontinued, and its content was integrated into Wikipedia.
By 2006, the English version of Wikipedia had over one million articles, and by its tenth anniversary in 2011, it had more than 3.5 million. Although the rate of new articles creation declined from a peak of 665,000 in 2007 to 374,000 in 2010, the Wikimedia Foundation shifted focus to expanding non-English versions. By 2011, Wikipedia had over 250 language versions, with some like French and German exceeding one million articles. Efforts also targeted developing languages like Swahili and Tamil. However, access restrictions imposed by the Chinese government occasionally limited Wikipedia’s reach in China.
Wiki Concept
A wiki is a type of hypertext publication that is collaboratively edited and managed by users via a web browser. It typically consists of multiple pages that can be edited publicly or within an organization for internal knowledge management.
Wikis are powered by wiki software or engines, which differ from other content management systems by allowing content creation without a defined owner. Wiki engines enable content creation using lightweight markup languages or rich-text editors. They vary in their features, with some offering control over access levels and content organization. Wikis facilitate user interaction, discussions, and collaboration.
There are many wikis used for various purposes, including knowledge management, note-taking, community building, and intranet development. Ward Cunningham, the creator of the first wiki software, WikiWikiWeb, defined a wiki as “the simplest online database that could possibly work.” The term “wiki” comes from the Hawaiian word for “quick.”
Wikipedia is the most well-known wiki-based site and ranks among the most popular websites on the internet. It consists of numerous wikis, each in a different language. As of September 2024, the English Wikipedia has the largest collection of articles, totaling 6,880,667.
